Richard Marcus holds the Coil Chair in Litigation at UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings), and is the Reporter for the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules, having begun work as a Reporter to the Committee in 1996. In that capacity, he has been primary drafter (among other provisions) of amendments to the discovery rules in 2000, 2006, 2013, and 2015, and also the 2003 and 2018 amendments to Rule 23, the class action rule. He is the lead author of casebooks on Civil Procedure and Complex Litigation, and the author of the discovery volumes of the Federal Practice and Procedure treatise ("Wright & Miller"). He has written many academic articles, including more than a dozen about U.S. discovery, and has served as Vice President-North America of the International Association of Procedural Law.
