Sir Mark Warby was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1981 and specialised in media and sports law, taking silk in 2002. He was joint head of his chambers from 2011-2014. He is joint editor of The Law of Privacy and the Media (2016) and contributed to Blackstone’s Guide to the Defamation Act 2013 and Sport: Law and Practice (2013). He began his judicial career as a Recorder of the Crown Court on the Midland Circuit in 2009, becoming a Deputy High Court Judge in 2013, and a High Court Judge in June 2014. He was Judge in Charge of the Media and Communications List from 2017 until his appointment to the Court of Appeal in February 2021. Notable decisions in the field of privacy and data protection include NT1 v Google (right to be forgotten), Lloyd v Google (class action), Aven v Orbis (false information in “Steele Dossier”), Sicri v Associated Newspapers (privacy rights of criminal suspect). Duchess of Sussex v Associated Newspapers (privacy and copyright in personal letter).
