Simon J. Frankel is a Judge on the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco.  Prior to becoming a judge in 2023, he was a partner at Covington & Burling LLP in San Francisco, where he handled a range of intellectual property and technology litigation. He has published widely on intellectual property and privacy topics and is co-author of Law, Ethics, and the Visual Arts (6th edition), published by Cambridge University Press in 2025.  He has long taught a course on Art and the Law at Stanford Law School.  He is a graduate of Harvard University (BA), Cambridge University (M. Phil.), and Yale Law School (JD).
