Judge Shields was appointed to the federal bench as U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Iowa in 1997. Prior to being appointed, he was a special partner at Lane & Waterman in Davenport. Judge Shields is a Judicial Observer for The Sedona Conference® Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production (WG1).
